For low temperature work, a cold well in the glove box floor may
be required. This consists of a working vessel placed in the glove
box floor, and a secondary insulated vessel outside of the glove
box.
The secondary vessel, the dewer, is partially filled with liquid
nitrogen, dry ice or some other chill medium, and fitted over the
protruding working vessel.
As cold wells are normally supplied as original equipment to a
new glove box, they are manufactured to order. This has the advantage
that they can then be custom supplied to suit individual needs of
depth and diameter.
The cold well is supplied with a cover plate, which fits flush
with the glove box floor allowing for normal working when not in
use.
